Lets Misbehave
I just saw the movie -Delovely, it was delicious, I love musicals, heck I sang in one when I was nine or ten, in our school, but thats whole another story.
When I came to America, I made it a point for me to see a few. I saw THE KING AND I, with YULE BRINER, as the king, he was majestic, after the show there was an standing ovation for him for fifteen minutes. I saw CHORUS LINE, EVITA, PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, HAIRSPRAY, PRODUCERS, RENT,and many more, sitting there with music playing, the lights, the colors and the actors all made up, singing and dancing, I always felt that I was in my elements.
Delovely is a movie about the life of COLE PORTER, a young kid from Indiana who became the most celebrated song writer of twentieth Century, and maybe ever. No matter where you have loved you must have heard at least one of his songs, LETS MISBEHAVE, ANYTHING GOES, DELOVELY, and many many more. Every singer of merrit feels obligated to come up with a Cole Porter Album. I enjoyed the movie, the songs and dances, KEVINE KLINE, fabolous as Cole Porter, and so is Ashly Judd, as the love of his life and his benefactor.
And like most artist he did have a dark side, he loved men as much as women, the fact he never tried to hide. His wife Linda knew about it and idulged him by accepting him the way he was. It is amasing how THE ARTIST, those of us that dare more, and try to create, and express their passions, they can not live a normal life, they need inspirations, and freedom to seek, and be inspired. They do not fit the molds of a father,or a husband, they need to roam the earth wioth no boundries, no limits, their soul is bigger than their physical bodies, and its their dark side as much as their other sides that helps them achieve it.
I have also recently found a new poet, through my friend METAL, his name is CAVAFY. I am not much into reading men's poetry, I like the connections that women poet make with themselves and their world much much better. They write from a different place, much deeper, much more intimate. But Cavafy, born in Egypt, of greek decent, oh he does dig deep, and he take you. With such efficieny of words, and clear images, he transcaends time, and brings you little marvels that stay with you for a while and maybe for ever. He never published his works during his life, only used to send them to his friends(you see I am not the only one), worked as a civil servent all his life, never married, he was a homosexuall, travelled a lot, and only after his death his friends and scholars gathered his poetry. Look him up, I can say he has been my most precious discovery in poetry this year, and i owe it to METAL.
Yesterday I posted here, my new poem FINDING THE MAIDEN, it is my poem one hundred and one. I have not posted the poem nymber one hundred yet, it is posted on POETS.COM, but it needs work, I need to tighten it, expand it a bit and when it is ready, I will treat you to it. I just had an Email from a dear man I know, he and his fiance became my client ten years ago. He has helped me a lot in my business and he knows I am greatfull to him, so he sent me a picture of his backyard, his new place by the water, it is glorious. I returned the favor by sending him the link for my site and invited him to visit us here, he called me back and he was laughing, realising what is behind this GYPSY M0OSELM BOY he has known, had surprised him. he had many encouraging words for me, and he might visit again.

I just can't get into movie musicals - actually to me they almost constitute a form of legal torture - but the theatrical presentations are wonderful!

"Movie Musicals constitute a form of legal torture?" LOL. I love movie musicals and theatrical productions. I have a collection of nearly every musical (at least my favorite).
Some of them are just classics - My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music which everyone has; but then there are others like Funny Girl (loved Barbara Streisand and Omar Shariff) and then there is Hello Dolly (again Barbara Streisand looks radiant as she walks down red staircase in a stunning gold evening dress). Of course my personal favorite will always be Thoroughly Modern Millie (you can see I love Barbara Streisand and Julie Andrews).
Musicals have great dancer numbers - Ann Miller and Cyd Charise are my two favorites. Cyd Charise's number in Silk Stockings (forget the film), in a drab, but flowing beige skirt is perhaps one of the best dance numbers I have seen...
O, don't forget - West Side Story, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, On the Town...Another great dance number choreographed by Bob Fosse (my fav.) was in Sweet Charity with Shirley MacClaine, Chita Rivera and another woman whose name just does not come to mind.
In the last ten years most people are caught up the big productions on screen like Chicago but hidden away is this really good film (one of my fav.) Strictly Ballroom. Idni, I have a feeling you might like this film...
But yes, the theatrical experience is really something else...then again there is nothing like watching Fred and Ginger dancing together check to check...

Isn't Cyrus's comment a hoot, Dear SL, my first introduction to movie musical was when I was knee high, and Indian Movies were very popular in Iran.
Movies like SANGAM, or VAGHT, and many more, I remember RAJ KAPOOR, VIGENTI MALA, RAJINDRA KOMAR, and many more, I loved the songs and dances in those movies, and then Of course all the good old American Classics. The last one that i saw and enjoyed plenty was MOULINE ROUGE, the whole theme of the Movie, the camera angles, the settings, and using contemporary songs, it was fab, I even got my Darling Kiana to watch it with me and she enjoyed it plenty.

The Indian movie musical? The staple diet of us Indians...it seems the film Sangam is the one that many Iranians recall as the first Indian film they saw. I have to admit that I have only seen the first 30 mins of this film. We rented it on video when my mother's younger sisters were with us in the UK in 1980 (I had not even entered into my teens), but since it dragged so much my father begged her to put on another film...Sangam has one song that I particularly liked - "Main Kiya Karo Ram Mujhe Buddha Milgaya" (translated, O God! What do I do I am stuck wtih an old man as a spouse)....Vyjantimala does a dance to this wearing very creative caberet outifts she puts together with items around her boudoir and dances for Raj Kapoor...Remember??
Waqt I never saw. If you are still interested in Indian films - watch Devdas (the new one with Ashwariya Rai and my fav. Madhuri Dixit). And if you want your kids to watch them, show them Main Hoon Na (that has one of the most beautiful actresses in my opinion - Sushmita Sen) - all have subtitles..
Moulin Rogue was made by Buzz Lurhmaan the guy who made Strictly Ballroom. SB was his earlier film and I think is far better than MR. I liked the first 30 mins of MR but afterwards it just seemed to drag and the dance numbers where just visual showpieces with very little actual dancing...Nicole Kidman is beautiful but she is not a dancer and her singing is pretty mediocre...(that's also from a friend's significiant other who is an opera singer)...
