They just can't help themselves.
Well, you think after what happened to Dan Rather, his peers would learn something, but no, they are just too arrogant, and feel so entitled, that no one can reach them, they do not have to account for anything, they are the new messengers, the new Messiahs, and have the responsibility of probing and proding in annals of Government to expose everything. It does not matter to them how their reporting might compromise the National Security of the Government, how it might encourage our enemies during the war. They just can not help themselves.
NEWSWEEK is reporting this week that there were Qurans (Moslems' holly book) left in Bathrooms in GUANTANA BAY prisons, and how some soldiers have even flushed one down the toilet. ANd MSNBC has reported that all over the world. They were demonstrations in Afghanistan, SEVENTEEN people were killed and hundreds were injured.
The report was done based on one Ananymos source, and was never confirmed by any recognised sources. Forget about all the rules of reporting, what about decency, with AMERICAN soldiers all over the world in harms way, to instigate such lies, with no regard for any one, is unconsciounable. SHAME, SHAME, AMERICAN ELITE LEFTIST MEDIA proves once again that how they do hate this country and all it stands for, and how they would not stop at anything to set their own agendas. This is Treason no matter how you look at it.
This Morning NEWSWEEK, has already appologised and has all its TALKING HEADS all over radio stations and TVs trying to justify what they have done. And now the insurgent have another weapon in their hand to instigate mayhem, and recruits new SOLDIERS OF GOD.

If it was for liberals, we were already in bed with soviet empire and they were still there or we were standing in line with Europeans to get the next arms or trade contract from Saddam and Khamenei. It is s shame how in the name of freedom, they negotiate every bit of it with its enemies. Anything for a buck, anything for a media coverage, anything

I think it is vital to question any government at anytime otherwise if we blindly go with our government, we will be victims ourselves. Our current administration has made a lot of decisions - both international and local that has raised a lot of questions.
However, the key area here is "anonymous sources." Do you disclose them and can you trust them? In this case, the sources could not be trusted as Newsweek was forced to recant the story but the question to ask is did these incidents acutually take place at anytime?
So I did a search and found the following link that might be of interest: http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2005-05-16-claims-detainees_x.htm
And this one: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4551683.stm
If this is indeed happening, then it is not about the Qu'ran but about any religious book getting desecrated.
However, I guess it is much better than getting the crap beaten out of you, electrocuted or your nails pulled out. No matter what, it sure beats what is happening in any torture prison in the Middle East when it comes to physical torture.
However, I disagree with you that the actions of Newsweek was tantamount to treason; to assume that they do it out of hatered of this country would be unfair either. Perhaps these two quotes might explain some of these actions:
Theodore Roosevelt:
To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. (1918)
and
James Baldwin (Civil Rights Activist and Author)
"I love America more than any other country in this world, and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually."

Dear SL, I agree with you that every government and president should be questioned, one of the reasons we all chose to live in this country is for the freedom's it offers. But printing accusations that have no merrit and are based on an anonymys single source goes against all these so called Journalists are tought at school. Two , yes two confirming confident sources, that is the rule. But they can not help themselves, for they have such a hate for this government and its military that they spew the poison no matter what the co0nsequences of it, and in the process they instigate more hatred for AMERICA, they endanger the lives of AMERICAN soldiers, and for what, ratings, money, and their beloved politzer prizes. They have lost so much credibility with AMERICAN PUBLIC, THAT ONLY ONE THIRD OF aMERICANS HAVE ANY TRUST IN AMERICAN MEDIA. Come on my friend this is not critisizm, this is TREASON.

I think words like hate for the government and then hate to the military are very extreme. I do see there is a need for constructive criticism of the Bush administration - read Molly Ivins book Bushwhacked. However, I do not see that there is a correlation between critique of the government and putting the soldiers at risk. The military is already in a percarious situation and were there from the beginning. The scandals at Abu Gharib was the start.
The recanting of the story by Newsweek is receiving a lot of skeptisim. Plus the disclosures made my former inmates def. adds questions as to what is going on. Granted sources need to be good, but I seriously don't see this act as one of treason - otherwise we could reduce ourselves to the level of censorship that would be pretty frightening.
Perhas you need to pick up a book by Anne Coulter in order to feel that the media is not all that conservative. But she got her rear end kicked on a media talkshow by Fareed Zakaria from Newsweek a year ago...
