Direction to nowhere

I never thought I enjoy a solitary dinner
sitting at the counter of a diner somewhere along a road
I never thought i allow myself enough space
To just walk in, sit at the counter and ask for menue

I never knew the roads could hold you in comfort
open themselves to you along the length of a day and
you come to enjoy the air that brushes your hair
Driving with no thoughts crowding your way

Holding a conversion with the gas station attendant while
paying for a soda " How about this weather we're having " , "How far to Tulsa"
noticing the nervous smile of a waitress rolling a ring on her finger, chewing gum
And cherish it all from the dark roots of her hair to her blue eye liners

I dont need to stand outside and look in,
I can breath the air, walk on dried leaves and smell the grass
I could say hello to the old man sitting on a rocking chair on his porch
and ask him for direction to nowhere, and see him smile as he shakes his head
